Empowering Children, Supporting Families

Small Steps was founded by Charlotte Slater in 2015, driven by a desire to inform and advocate for families facing the complex special education landscape in UK. Charlotte also wanted to show that science-based teaching methods like Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) can be child-centered, flexible and, above all, fun for learners.

Our journey has been driven by the growing movement towards mainstream inclusion for children with special educational needs and at Small Steps we are passionate about making inclusion a meaningful reality for everyone. It is one of our core goals to assist parents and schools in realising this ideal.

A commitment to respecting the dignity and autonomy of every child has been an integral part of our approach since our inception. We have long recognised the value of neurodiversity and remain dedicated to denouncing ableism in ABA. It has been heartening to see these principles increasingly embraced across the UK in recent years and the brilliant work that the UK Society for Behaviour Analysis is doing to support this 21st century mindset.

At Small Steps, we care about bringing research-based, modern ABA practices to the forefront in the UK. We aim to lead by example, advocating for effective, evidence-based strategies that support all children to achieve what they want in life. We focus on needs and goals rather than labels and work with children and young adults from across the spectrum of neurodiversity, both with and without formal diagnoses.
